Teaching Philosophy

The guitar is an extremely popular instrument in today's culture and the most popular aside from the human voice. Due to the many different styles, genres, and levels of expertise of guitarists in today's society, it is important to provide students with the highest level of technical training in order to be competitive among guitarists in the world today. It is essential that students endeavor to develop performance skills which require the highest level of expertise and competence. This requires the ability to function as a solo performer with fingerstyle classical technique ability. Classical guitar is not a style of music, but rather, it is a technique of playing the instrument. Guitarists are fortunate to have the largest historical repertoire of any instrument (excluding the human voice) which expands 500 years. It is this solo literature/repertoire (from the 1500's to the present day) that provides the greatest challenges, both technically and musically. The development of classical technique is essential in becoming the best solo performer one can be with the ability to perform guitar literature that exists from the 16th century Renaissance to the present day.

The teaching philosophy is to develop a students performance technique by establishing the fundamental principles of performance pedagogy and to build on this foundation by applying principles of musicianship to develop a students ability to be a successful performer, musician, artist, and teacher. A critical and important part of this development involves the study of etudes from the 19th and 20th centuries that will prepare students for study and successful performance of the concert literature of the classical guitar that exists from the 16th century Renaissance to the modern-day.
